Monthly Playlist: March 2008
Oh hey, it’s April. Time flies when you’re having… a busy month. Or something.
So for those of you that don’t read Buzzgrinder — which, according to my highly-detailed traffic metrics, is 100% of all two of you — it might be worth noting that I didn’t get Radiohead tickets despite staying up all night for that sole reason. Still looking for an outlet for my anger. Someone buy me a punching bag. Or, even better, Radiohead tickets. (Preferably ones where I can actually, you know, see the band without binoculars.)
March was more dub, a few ambient discoveries and rediscoveries (Stars of the Lid and Brian Eno, respectively) and remembering a bunch of stuff was good that I hadn’t listened to in a while. Oh, and sometimes watching TV influences my music listening, oddly enough. That’s where Yael Naïm and José Gonzalez came from.
- Marilyn Manson – “The Reflecting God” (Antichrist Superstar)
- Dub Trio – “Awakening Dub” (Exploring the Dangers Of)
- Envy – “A Will Remains In The Ashes” (A Dead Sinking Story)
- Brian Eno – “1/1″ (Ambient 1: Music for Airports)
- Bloc Party – “Banquet” (Silent Alarm)
- Gorillaz – “Dracula” (Gorillaz)
- Boys Like Girls – “The Great Escape” (Boys Like Girls)
- Nickel Creek – “Doubting Thomas” (Why Should the Fire Die?)
- He Is Legend – “(((louds” (Suck Out the Poison)
- Public Enemy – “Son of a Bush” (Body Of War: Songs That Inspired An Iraq War Veteran)
- Bright Eyes – “When the President Talks To God” (Body Of War: Songs That Inspired An Iraq War Veteran)
- Yael Naïm – “New Soul” (Yael Naïm)
- Rogue Wave – “California” (Descended Like Vultures)
- Stars of the Lid – “Even If You’re Never Awake” (and Their Refinement of the Decline)
- José Gonzalez – “Killing For Love” (In Our Nature)
- José Gonzalez – “Teardrop” (In Our Nature)

Josh, just wanted to post a few thoughts about this bro.
I must admit that I don’t have the opportunity to read each and every post on your blog but I do visit several times a month. I must say you have a wide range of musical tastes.
I grew up listening to the big names of blues/rock/metal. Music was my identity. I spent thousands of dollars on CD’s. I paid big money for the best concert tickets. Josh I worshipped music. If I wasn’t listening to it, I was playing. I played in many bands for many years. You know what it takes; it’s almost like being married
BIG COMMITMENT. I too got into dark music. I knew it was dark and I loved it. I can still recite most of the lyrics from any Black Sabbath song (to my shame). Iron Madden, Tool, Dio, Judas Priest…these bands are angelic compared to some of the darker bands.
When God saved my wretched soul all that changed. He changed my heart! I’m not perfect but He’s perfecting me. I began to hate those things that misrepresented/disrespected/hated/maligned His HOLY Name.
Josh, I don’t know you but I’m going to assume that you’re a born-again believer. Listen to this:
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
Eph. 5:8-12
In your first thread back in 2005 you said, “The purpose of this blog is…To constantly challenge myself to open my ears and appreciate new music in whatever form it may come.” So I’m going to assume that you, “appreciate” the artists and music titles you post here unless you say otherwise. Actually you said that in “March was more dub, a few ambient discoveries and rediscoveries (Stars of the Lid and Brian Eno, respectively) and remembering a bunch of stuff was good that I hadn’t listened to in a while.” I’m assuming that you’re saying that – marilyn manson – “The Reflecting God” (Antichrist Superstar) is “good.”
If you are a born again believer Josh, God says that you are to “have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness.” Let’s take a look at the lyrics to the song that you said was, “good.”
Your world is an ashtray we burn and coil like cigarettes the more u cry ur ashes turn to mud
the nature of the leeches the virgin’s feeling cheated u’ve only spent a second of ur life
my world is unaffected there is an exit here
I say it is then it’s true there is a dream inside a dream
I’m wide awake the more I sleep u’ll understand when I’m dead
I went to god just to see and I was lookin at me
saw that heaven and hell were lies when I’m god everyone dies!!
scar scar can u feel my power shot here and the world gets smaller
scar scar can u feel my power one shot and the world gets smaller
let’s jump upon the sharp swords cut away our smiles
without the threat of death there’s no reason to live at all
each thing I show u is a piece of my death no salvation no forgiveness…
Dude – these lyrics are blasphemous all the way through. If you are “LIGHT,” by God’s grace, you should be able to SEE this.
At the end marilyn says, “saw that heaven and hell were lies…” In essence, he is calling God, the Lord Jesus Christ as liar. Josh – please tell me that you can see the anti-GOD message in these lyrics.
